Enlighten me please!

Can anyone who has been to cosmetology school tell me what it is like, costwise, and the types of things you learn to do? Also, I want to try more nail polish brands. I know a lot, obviously more than your average chick, but if you have any weird ones I probably haven't heard of, please let me know :) URBAN DECAY ALICE IN WONDERLAND BOOK OF SHADOWS is out this Friday! I'm already drooling... Sorry this isn't a real post, I work every night this week, so I don't have time to review or do any looks really. I will this weekend, pinky promise. Until I have enough time to post, I will just continue reading your lovely blogs. I hope you week is going well, only 2 days until the weekend!

  1. It really depends on which school you go to and what kind. My school was a small one and it rocked/sucked, haha.

It was about $12,000 and it really focused on state board stuff. Had homework once a week, test once a week, and we touched on everything but we mainly focused on hair. Nothing too fantastic just basic stuff. Sets, perms, cutting, coloring, some nails, some makeup (not much), and some styling and stuff like that.

It really, really, really depends on where you go.

We HAD to wear makeup everday and fix our hair. We had blue smocks, white pants and white shoes. They had to be white. No piercings, no fun colored hair (uugggghh?) and yeah, haha. I made a lot of great friends, though. And the teachers were really cool but they had they're moments when you just want to be like "AHHH I HATE YOU!" They're nothing like high school teachers. At least mine weren't.

I'm trying to think what else...I don't know. Make sure to ask a lot of questions, ask around about the school, etc. Make sure they focus enough on state board stuff! You won't get your license without passing the state board tests. We had a state board class once a month. I haaaatttedd them, so boring. But the test is boring so of course, haha.

Umm...I don't know. There are good points and bad to everything. Some schools have some where you can focus on particular things. Like, you get be an esthetician, do nails or do hair...or just go for it and get the cosmetology license and be able to do everything.

I could go on forever, I think. Haha.

  4. My school was the same as Julissa's...around $12-13,000. Before you go, just make sure that you can actually find a job where you live. Out of the 30 or so girls in my class, only 2 do hair now. I regret going to cos school as the industry is DEAD here. I worked at a salon for a while but they went out of business. Just be sure you can actually work after spending all that money!!!

Sorry to be a downer, I just remember everyone telling me how easy it was to get a job. Also, you won't have health insurance. Like, anywhere. Especially if you booth rent (which no one does around me anymore).

  5. To extend on what Lisa Kate said, it's totally the opposite here, lol. There are a million salons around here. Do you plan on staying there or coming to Texas for it if you do? I can tell you that I went to school in a little town and the school was downtown. You know what else was downtown? About 4 salons! All within walking distance. And that was only in downtown, which in this town is small.

But yeah, definitely see if the salon business is boomin'. And make sure you want to do hair AND work in a salon! Cause there isn't much else you can do with it besides work in a salon. Lame!

I will say, although I never ever planned on working in a salon, I'm glad I went to school. :)

  6. I haven't gone to any cosmetology schools (I have some certifications in makeup artistry, but that's it)...however, I have found an awesome nail polish on eBay. I believe it's a Korean brand. Here is the URL to the seller I use: http://myworld.ebay.com/jolieeeee/ (Feel free to remove the URL if not appropriate.)

  7. I was thinking of doing the very same thing, cosmetology. The only thing is, I don't really want to learn to do hair. I live in Texas, and last time I checked it cost a fraction of what JUlissa quoted. I really would only do it if I could get out of doing hair. I just would like to learn the makeup part, and become a makeup artist!

  8. Thank you for all the info everyone, I really appreciate it. Starlight, I'm actually going to be going to Texas for college, and I want to do makeup too, not hair. :/

  9. Have fun when you go to college! It'll be so exciting! :) I've heard the UD AIW palette is apparently going on ebay now for insane prices. I'm just going to wait til it actually comes out to take a look at it...bidding on something in a war on ebay is so not a good way to spend money wisely..

  10. I can't comment on the cosmetology thing! But I can tell you that I really enjoy Brucci nail polish! And Anise. Anise is sold at DSW. Brucci is at some Rite Aids, Image Beauty. I'm not sure where else. I'd also say Nfu-Oh, I'm not sure if you've tried that yet? Their flakies are AMAZING. #51: must have. They're expensive though - $12.50 a bottle!

  11. PS: Brucci must have is Typhoon Lagoon. Anise I like because their polishes are well-pigmented and they make amazing duos! I believe they're always on a buy one get one type of deal and retail for about $5. I usually pay about $3 for a bottle of Brucci. Nfu-Oh I buy at Fabuloustreet - link is on my blog. Ok, I'll shut up now!

  14. Thanks Judy for the brands! I really want to try Nfu-Oh, I just saw their flakies on someone's blog and they look so cool. Thanks for the link too!

@Lulu- I did want it, before I saw it was $52... I can't spend that much on it, I would feel like it was such a waste of money.

@yoli: thanks, it's some google image, lol. I'm going to change it to something of mine soon.
