Fuck you, Newport News

Unless you want to read about how pissed off I am right now, skip this post. I have a hell of a hard time finding bikinis that will look good on me, since I've been gaining weight but still have tiny boobs. Everything makes me look the great combination of fat + flat. I was really excited to browse through my mom's Newport News catalog and see a bikini with a padded bra-style top, because I've been looking for one everywhere. They had a bunch of mix n match bottoms too, and each piece is only $15, so I got really excited and ordered a size 2 and 4, because I didn't know which would fit me. And $30 is such a good price! When I got them, they fit me like I was shoving myself into doll clothes. For the record, I wear a jr's size M, a small or medium at Hollister / A&F, XS at Old Navy and Charlotte Russe. I should be able to fit comfortably into a size 4. But no. So, I ordered the same things in a size 6 and 8. They got here today. Here's the website links if you're curious: top bottom 1 bottom 2 Shock of the century, they still didn't fit in those sizes. They weren't too small, but the tops are cut so insanely low that my risk of pulling a celeb-style nip slip is about a 99% if I tried to wear them out. I even tried pulling the padding out and adjusting the straps, but still to no avail. Both types of bottoms were low in the front and very high in the back, so they looked awful on me. It made me wonder what kind of women they expect to be able to wear these. This crap isn't even what makes me the angriest. I noticed a really strong smell on one of the bikini tops. It smelled like straight up chlorine. I thought maybe that was just the factory smell or something, so I smelled the other pieces. They smelled like plastic. THEN I noticed the smelly top had no tag. Every other piece had a tag saying you can return swimwear, but ONLY if the tag is still on. They sent me a USED bikini top. Didn't anyone bother to check to see that there was no tag? And that it smelled like a swimming pool? Each piece comes in its own little sealed bag, so SOMEONE had to reseal it in a new bag, ignoring the fact that it had obviously been used. I am so angry right now. Not only do I still have no swimsuit at almost the end of July, when it's been around/over 100 degrees every day for the last week but I got sent something that someone else had been using, which is so disgusting and unsanitary. I buy used clothes all the time, but I'm not comfortable buying a used swimsuit. And the fact that it SHOULD be new, yet they sent me someone's old bikini top, infuriates me. My advice after this incident is to stay away from Newport News at all costs. I know it is pretty much targeted towards middle aged ladies, but they have some really cute shit in there sometimes, so I always flip through it. Now I know never to order from them again.

  1. First off, you -need- to email their customer service department. I had a similar complaint with another company and when I got a shitty (excuse my language) response back, I simply told them that I had a blog and would be posting their (lackluster) response. They decided to contact me back, within an hour to be precise, and apologized profusely, and refunded my money. I'm not saying it's very nice to use that tactic -- but that is straight up disgusting. You have 221 followers and that means 221 people (plus anyone they tell) to not buy from their company. Definitely don't take this lying down, girl!

As for the bikini issue -- I have the same problem. I'm actually about the same size as you (I wear an XS in Old Navy, used to be S in Charlotte Russe but everything seems bigger there now)... in women's dress pants, I'm a 4-6, I'm probably a 2 in my waist but I have a large behind so I have to go up. Yeah, I tried on a few Victoria's Secret bikini bottoms in a LARGE and I had flab hanging out everywhere. Large there is size 10-12! I've also tried Target and had similar issue -- I'm usually a large there and still get love handle bits. I've had the most luck with VS (just trying different cuts on, ended up with a medium in a "Very Sexy" foldover bottom) and just picking up a cute pair of swim shorts from Target (the ones with the elastic at the top) to match whatever bikini top I liked.

Omg, that was SO long. I'm sorry :D

  2. OMG, this is so infuriating. Companies need to learn how to send the right thing if they're going to allow people to order things.
Sorry this had to happen to you :(

  3. I had the same issue with them, years back. I wanted a tankini really badly when I was about 13, and my mom gave me the catalog. I had to send the pieces back numerous times because they were so tiny. I thought I got really fat and just hadn't noticed it, honestly. (For the record, I was around a size 9/10 at the time in juniors bottoms. I wound up having to get a 16 from them. Not fun.)

    I'd contact customer service ASAP.
I'm pretty sure Victoria's Secret has padded tops, and although they get kinda pricey they last a long time. Plus they have some good sales on them towards the end of summer. Good luck with your bathing suit search!

  4. That's absolutely ridiculous! What's worse, is that the size is different depending on where the garment was made. For instance, I worked at Victoria's secret and there was a difference between those clothes made in sri lanka and china, etc. Honestly, it's stories like these that make me want to do one of two things a. make my own bathing suit from old t-shirts (I've done it and it looks SUPER cute) or b. buy from an independent retailer on ETSY... at least they will make it to YOUR measurements and not arbitrarily assign a number size (that may, or may not be correct).

  5. Ok, what happened is completely bananas. Holy crabola that sucked! My sister warned me years and years ago about Newport news so I never ordered from them despite how sometimes I see some cool "looking" stuff on their catalog. Now I'm even more sure that I'll never order from them.

Funny, lately I just went to a frustrating swimsuit shopping cuz I have a get away in Sept. And apparently in July stores are already pushing for fall collection and the swimsuits are all left overs of weird-as* styles/colors and sizes. Gosh I didn't know why I had to plan out my wardrobe 2 months in advance! So this leaded me to online swimsuit shopping (totally hated it):

I know this is kind of late but, Victoria's secret also have swimsuit, push up tops, I mean specifically cuz I'm pear shaped and I hit the jackpot of small breast from the gene pool. Their tops are pretty true to size (I tried them on) but the bottoms I'm not so sure but after researches online on forum it is concluded that you should just order the size you normally would wear with their underwear bottoms. Oh and they are on sale! You can get bottoms for $10 a pop and a push up bra for around $18

Ok.. sorry for this long comment. Thanks for reading.

  6. OMG girl, that sucks!

I ordered some of their swimsuits a few years ago, and had varying degrees of success with what I ordered. However, nothing like what you experienced! That's horrible!

  7. I cannot believe that! Thank you for sharing this. I have not ordered from them in a long time, but will never order from them again after hearing your experience!

  8. ewwwww usedness!! I hate when people don't pay attention to returns. In my job the returns dude will plop a stapler back on the shelf that comes in that crappy "you have to cut this shit open" plastic, while it's been cut into! But noooooo he didn't see that. Or the other 2 returned that were mysteriously chopped open.

Also I bought this Alice in Wonderland body spray and lotion set and returned them to the drug store because they had no scent. Sure enough, I go in the next week and some asshole PUT IT BACK ON THE SHELF!! It was a defect! It was OPENED!
    Dump people everywhere :s

  9. Thanks for the advice ladies. You better believe that their cs department will be hearing from my mom (lol), since she ordered the swimsuits for me with her email/credit card. The whole thing makes me feel bad especially because my mom paid for these, not me. I pay for almost everything I buy, so of course my mom is nice and pays and that's the time something like this happens... ug. Plus shipping the 4 freaking pairs of swimsuits back will cost money, too.

I checked the VS website and they had a TON of cute swimsuits on sale! Something seems to be buggy with their website right now, but I'd bet when it works I could find something that seems nice and isn't expensive.

  10. That would piss me off! Get your money back!

  11. Um, hell no, shipping the pairs of swimsuits back shouldn't cost you any money, in my opinion. Their fuckup, they should pay for return shipping. I haven't had to deal with returning clothes in a while, but I have to return defective books or the wrong books entirely at work from time to time (I order the books, and sometimes check them into our system, for a university library), and when it's the vendor who fucked up, they cover the cost to return, whether we're getting a refund or a replacement. If I were your mom, I'd get my game face on before calling, and start out nice but be prepared to flip the bitch switch if necessary. I mean, shipping used and therefore unsanitary bathing suits could potentially turn into a PR nightmare, I'd imagine, so they should be ALL OVER fixing it to your satisfaction.

  12. Cool that you found swimsuits on VS -- just be wary that they charge to return stuff as well! You may want to hop into a store and just do a quick size check on the bottoms. Again, I'm a similar size and I ended up with a medium, but there was another pair that I barely fit a large in. Some of the tops are also wonky (really cute online but your boobs will look off)

  13. Argh, what a pain! And too gross on the used one. Hope you get it sorted out.
FYI, I worked a bajillion years in the retail clothing industry. Most stores start getting swimwear after the holidays and put it on the sales floor in February. They have it clearance by July 4, so even if you're not thinking of swimming when you're shivering in the winter, that's the time to find a selection.
Land's End (who I've heard good things about) and Title 9 sports (who I love) still have a good selection of swimwear. More than you're looking to spend probably, but the customer service is excellent.

  14. Ew I hope you post about their response, this whole thing is fucking disgusting :| I totally agree with Cydonian, I'd let them know you have a blog and have posted about this >;D

  15. This is why catalog/online shopping really pisses me off sometimes. That is seriously.. soo poor. like. wtf I would probably be throwing stuff by now..

  16. Eww. That's gross. Just gross.

  17. I'm not a fan of Newport News myself.

I got my bikini from Vickie's years ago, and I ordered it online. It's a reversible tankini that I spent something like $70-$80 on, but I hadn't had luck finding anything I liked for years before I splurged on it.

  18. I hope everything works out. Keep us posted. :)

  19. Wow! That really sucks! I have not ordered from them in about 4 years. I have a couple tops that I really like but did have sizing issues. I'm a small gal but I am tall (5' 8") so I'm long and the shirts look like belly shirts on me. Which is OK if that is what I wanted, but it wasn't. Their sizing is way off. Like adult styles for really small oddly shaped people.
I hope you get it worked out.
